Pharmacology

Acting on the molecular mechanisms of vision

In pharmacological research on Stargardt disease, researchers are working on the development of molecules which act on direct or indirect molecular mechanisms of vision.

Examples of research direction

  • Medical drugs acting on the biological cycle of vision in order to reduce the production of specific molecules in photoreceptor cells which produce lipofuscin in the retinal pigment epithelium (a toxic derivative of vitamin A).
  • Medical drugs acting as retinal protectors to prevent damage, maintain or improve the visual function (visual acuity and visual field).
